Following our dissection of lukka chuppi in the previous episode, the next aspect that we are going to enjoy in the Rahman musical world is the usage of a very subtle music in the background which is usually not so audible in the first run, but listening keenly, there is a beautiful cuteness happening in the background. Example, In Ennavale song, during the whole song among other things like flute, orchestration, there is Tabla and Unni Krishnan voice so prominent, and there is also repetitive key note happening in the background which goes unnoticed. Did you notice anything? Now listen to this carefully. Look for the element other than orchestra, unni voice and table. Itsnot so tricky, listen to the first auido and get that repetitive tone inside and listen to the second one, you will get it. This song has all the Rahman trademark to it:1. It has a mind-blowing flute, in the start and second interlude. 2. One of the Veena/violin/thavil/Sarang/Sax instrument bit. 3. Beautiful female chorus/humming.
And in Minsara kanna from Padayappa, we know this song is legendary, we have seen this being performed in lots of competitions and reality shows. This song is majestic with, jathi(thom tha thakita sung in the end), mridangam and nithyashree’s powerful voice. I mean we want the attitude of the antagonist in each word and she nailed it. But have you ever noticed the flute notes in second stanza before each line. If you think about it, the flute music would be like a hint to say how the next line is going to be sung. After two inter-lines flute, there is blow flute accompanying sreenivas voice.
How cute it is? Come on, Go for it and get your eyes widen.
In Sahara saral thoovutho song from the Movie Shivaji, the subtle mridhangam in the midst of a western orchestration and musical arrangement. This thought process is so delightful. There is a beautiful chorus, flute, orchestra going on, and the mridhangam in the middle of all these is so refreshing.
Is that all? No its a long list and will be covered more in coming episodes. Keep reading though.
Now lets talk about the musical farewell to the songs even after the lyrics stop. Since we are on Minsara poove already, lets get immersed in this masterpiece classical farewell to the song.
I have already mentioned the collective ensemble of music in the end of lukka chuppi. Similarly there are many songs with soulful musical farewell at the end of song. The magic continues to flow. Example, In azhage sugama, its as if sadness of the song is shaped into instrument and flowing through it through flute and violin. The essence of Ragam Sahana is squeezed into the instruments and it melts your heart.
Vidukathaya intha vazhakai from Muthu, there is musical feast happening even after the lyrics stops, in this case its veena.
To be continued with more in next episode. Comment below if you found any such beautiful song with subtle music or a beautiful musical farewell.
